A Bremen strategy for the future of the ports will be supported with up to five million euros in federal funds. With the money, the concept for digitalized and intelligent ports in Bremen can soon be implemented, as the Ports Department announced on Thursday.
“This is an important step to ensure the long-term competitiveness of the ports and to establish Bremen as a pioneer of intelligent port solutions,” emphasized Senator Kristina Vogt (Left).
The concept won out from 500 applications nationwide and is one of 20 selected initiatives to receive financial support from the Federal Ministry of Research, the department further announced. The Bremen projects are to receive up to five million euros over the next four years. An initial discussion on this is to take place at the end of June, and funding will officially start at the beginning of 2025.
Bremen’s “Smartport” strategy was launched in March. Among other things, it envisages the further development of an existing communication platform through which the port companies can exchange information. The concept also includes possible applications of artificial intelligence, which could be used, for example, to track containers. More than 70 companies, authorities and scientific institutions are involved in the strategy. The port department is in charge, and Bremenports was responsible for developing it.
The ports of Bremen are among the most important in Europe. Container ships, car transporters and cruise ships are handled in Bremerhaven. The ports in the city of Bremen specialize in general cargo such as steel and bulk cargo such as coal. In 2023, they recorded a decline in handling compared to the previous year.
