The future is driving on the Autobahn between Landau an der Isar and the BMW plant in Munich: “I fill up with HVO100 to reduce CO 2 emissions,” announce the green stickers on four trucks belonging to the logistics service provider Guggemos (GV Trucknet), which are on the approx 120 kilometers long route several times a day.
They supply the main plant in Munich just-in-time from Landau. The one-year pilot operation with the renewable diesel fuel HVO100 has been running since December 2022. In March 2023, it was expanded to six more trucks. These are part of the DB Schenker fleet and use shuttle services to transport warehouse parts from the BMW Group supply center in Eching for production in Munich. The trucks cover a good 40 kilometers on each round trip.
90 percent savings possible
The abbreviation HVO stands for ‘Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil’ and the suffix ‘100’ indicates that this is 100 percent, ie as a pure fuel, tanked in a conventional diesel truck. The fuel is obtained from various waste, residues and renewable raw materials such as used cooking oils.
According to the BMW Group, the Finnish manufacturer Neste’s “Neste MY Renewable Diesel” (HVO100) can reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 90 percent (“Well to Wheel”) compared to fossil diesel. This is offset by an average additional consumption of around three percent.
Compared to conventional diesel fuel, the ten trucks that are currently on the road for the BMW Group with HVO100 in the tank will save up to 800 tonnes of CO 2 a year, according to the company.
