According to Total News, citing the government’s information base, the amount of EU oil imports from Iran is not a significant figure, but it indicates the desire of European refineries to ignore the US sanctions against Iran, and the inclusion of these figures in the official statistics of European oil imports. It shows the desire of European authorities to distance themselves from the sanctions or at least show their opposition to the US sanctions policy against Iran.
According to this report, three European Union members imported crude oil or oil products from Iran last year. These countries include Romania, Poland and Bulgaria.
Romania has imported a total of 4 thousand tons of crude oil or oil products from Iran in 2022. Bulgaria has imported 168 tons and Poland 13 tons of crude oil or oil products from Iran this year.
Bulgaria is the newest EU member that has imported oil or products from Iran since the US oil sanctions against Iran in 2018. The first shipment of Iran’s imported oil was sent to this country in December 2022. In January 2023, Bulgaria imported 83 tons of oil or oil products from Iran for the second consecutive month.
